About Us
Botany finds fashion in the bold motifs of Minneapolis-made Rectangle Designs. Designer Sarah Nassif crosses her botany degree with her passion for screenprinting to create a collection of original textile motifs: a modern take on leaves, prairie flora, and trees created from her photographs of the Midwest and beyond.
All products are hand-screenprinted in Minneapolis using only water-based, phtalate- and pvc-free inks. Textile industry bolt-remainder fabrics, vintage notions and environmentally sensitive production methods are used in all of our designs.
Rectangle Designs is only available at our partner stores
and at our online shop.
Our Name
Rectangle Designs began as an experimental art project, sort of an "empty box" waiting to be filled. Upon leaving her corporate job as a data analyst, Sarah returned to her creative roots to explore screenprinting and botanical forms, not knowing exactly where it would lead her. The name Rectangle was a flexible title for an unknown outcome, and also referred to the rectangular viewfinder of her camera.
The project led her to document nature in her adopted home of Minnesota. Unfamiliar with
the diversity of hardwoods and prairie plants, she focused on one frame at a time to
build a digital herbarium. We invite you to make a viewfinder with your thumbs and index
fingers to peer at your patch of the world up close. You will find it helps you focus on
what is before you, helping you let go of the bigger picture in order to appreciate the
smaller details. We hope to inspire you to find your own rectangle designs.
Teaching
Sarah Nassif is available for educational programming on how art can help us connect with
nature. She designs and teaches workshops that include field trips to natural areas and
hands-on screenprinting. Themes range from examining the urban forest to exploring the
human-nature relationship. Please contact her
directly for further information.
